Attracting and retaining doctors in Tasmania, particularly in rural communities has always been difficult. One of the reasons for this is the after hours demands on doctors time. The Australian Government is trying to make General Practice more appealing and encourage doctors to both move to and stay in communities outside the capital cities. A key strategy is to provide support during the after hours period. In Tasmania, this support is offered by ‘GP Assist (Tasmania)’ part of the Clinical Solutions group or companies.
GP Assist is a health call line, staffed by specially trained nurses and doctors who can provide telephone clinical assessment and information services by phone. GPs across Tasmania can choose to divert their calls to this service when they are not immediately available. Patients diverted to GP Assist, first speak to a nurse and if necessary to a doctor. In this way many problems and concerns can be solved without disturbing the patients regular GP.
